I have no idea what’s going to happen with this one. Clearly The Cinematography Podcast is a marketing vehicle for Hot Rod Cameras, an LA-based movie camera company helmed by show host Illya Friedman. He and Ben Rock, the show’s other host, could be doing this as a one-off for all I know. One episode came out earlier this month, and that’s all I can find. Just one. Maybe they covered the show’s limited airing at some point, but I heard no mention of it, so I can’t really say.
What I can say is I’m totally on board. This show’s not necessarily about the technology or even the jargon associated with directors of photography and movie making. That’s for industry people–cameramen, editors, etc. Not to say The Cinematography Podcast doesn’t take itself seriously–it’s not hacky or jokey. The production quality is top-notch, and the hosts are composed and intelligent. Both are aware of their voices but as comfortable in the aural arena as they are in the visual.
The first episode features an interview with cirector/cinematographer Jason Wingrove. There’s a sedate NPR vibe that will speak to fans of Fresh Air and On the Media.
The hosts’ goal is to shed light on what has, through the proliferation of iPhone “cinematographers,” become a widely misunderstood craft. If you like movies, and you appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into movie making, you’ll dig this one.
