I saw Crispin Hellion Glover’s Big Slideshow 15 years ago or so, and I got to meet him in the lobby afterward. He was signing copies of his movie, and I didn’t buy one, so I asked him to sign my ticket. He signed it “Jingle Dell.” (I have a special place in my heart for his role in David Lynch’s Wild at Heart.)
He was soft spoken and polite, despite my declaration of distaste for the film he’d shown–a project of his wherein all the actors had Down’s Syndrome. In hindsight, I wasn’t really offended by the movie, but probably wanted to leave a lasting impression with an actor who I had come to respect and appreciate as not only a gifted artist but a generational touchstone of sorts.
When his name popped up in my Instacast stream, I was all over it. In episode 488 of Nerdist, Mr. Glover talked almost uninterrupted for an hour and 23 minutes about mainstream media’s misconception of his motives and his personality in general. He was promoting his film Everything is Fine, which I believe is the final installment in what has become a trilogy–the final act to the story I was introduced to 15 years ago.
His promotion took a back seat very quickly in the podcast though, and for once I got to hear his cogent take on what’s wrong and right about the industry that commoditized George McFly.
